SOLAR WATER
WELLS

In areas where ground water is so scarce, sometimes the only solution is to build environmentally-friendly and sustainable solar powered electric pumps

Across parts of Asia and Africa, a standard hand pump or basic water well is often not enough to provide clean and usable water for communities. In many areas, water levels are extremely low, or the only reliable water source lies too far underground for traditional methods to reach. This makes it difficult for families to access safe water for daily needs such as drinking, cooking and hygiene.

In such locations, the only practical option is to drill a deep well and install a system strong enough to extract water efficiently. However, using a diesel generator to power the pump is costly, requires continuous fuel, and demands frequent maintenance. For poor and rural communities, these ongoing expenses are simply not sustainable.

Solar Water Wells offer a far more sustainable and effective solution for these communities. By using clean, renewable energy, solar-powered pumps can draw water from deep underground without relying on costly fuel or unreliable electricity. This makes them ideal for remote areas where traditional methods fall short.

Although the initial installation cost of a solar well is higher, it quickly becomes a cost-efficient and reliable source of water. Solar wells can extract water multiple times a day at little to no ongoing cost, providing long-term access to safe, clean water for entire communities. This creates a lasting impact that families can depend on for years to come.

MUSLIM CHARITY
INTERVENTION

In regions hit by drought and severe water shortages, families often struggle to secure clean and dependable drinking water. Traditional solutions such as hand pumps or shallow wells cannot meet the needs of areas where water levels are extremely low or groundwater lies deep beneath the surface. These challenges make it essential to provide sustainable systems that can reach deeper water sources safely and consistently.

Solar Water Wells offer communities a long-term, environmentally friendly way to access clean water every day. Powered by renewable energy, they operate without costly fuel or frequent maintenance, making them ideal for remote and vulnerable areas. By delivering a stable source of safe drinking water, these wells improve health, protect families and give entire communities the tools they need to thrive for years to come.

Thanks to your generosity, Muslim Charity has continued to expand its water programme in the regions that need help the most. Last year alone, we installed 260 solar water wells, along with 32 large solar water wells, across Pakistan and Uganda. These larger systems provide higher water output, supporting whole villages and strengthening community resilience in areas facing extreme water scarcity.

In total, 58,315 people were helped through solar wells last year, receiving a dependable supply of clean and safe drinking water. To date, tens of thousands continue to benefit from the solar wells we have installed over the years. Each well serves as a lasting investment in health, dignity and opportunity — transforming daily life for families who once struggled to access even the most basic necessity.

FAQs

A Solar Water Well normally takes 9–12 months from the time a donation is received until completion. This includes land assessment, drilling, installation and water-quality checks. Once finished, donors receive a full report with photos, location and beneficiary numbers.

In many regions, the groundwater sits far too deep for a traditional hand pump to reach effectively. Solar wells use a powered pump, giving a stronger and more reliable water flow for large communities. This makes them ideal for drought-prone and remote areas where manual methods fail.

Solar panels power a submersible pump that extracts water from deep underground without fuel or electricity. The system works throughout daylight hours, providing a steady supply of clean water daily. Because it runs on renewable energy, ongoing costs are extremely low for communities.

Muslim Charity works with experienced local partners and engineers who manage drilling and installation. After completion, community members are trained on basic upkeep to ensure long-term sustainability. If technical support is needed later, our field teams can assist when required.

Yes, you can sponsor a Solar Water Well in honour or memory of a loved one. Their name can be added to the well’s plaque if desired, and included in the completion report. This makes it a powerful form of Sadaqah Jariyah, bringing lasting benefit and reward.

Once the well is completed, you will receive a detailed feedback report showing the exact location, photos and number of people helped. This ensures full transparency and allows you to see the direct impact of your donation. Reports are typically shared once the project is fully finished.
