Your Zakat can provide nutritious meals to children in need in schools

155 million children around the world go hungry every single day, and thousands tragically lose their lives due to malnutrition. These figures are devastating, and shocking as a reality in 2023. A lack of food is a key reason why so many children from impoverished communities are not in school. Many families would rather their children work to support the family. Those children who do go to school often have no breakfast at home, and no food with them for lunch at school. As a result, their concentration falls and instead of thriving and doing well, they fail to connect with their education and really do not succeed.

Children are hungry for a future. They deserve the opportunity to learn, do well at school and make their sweet dreams a reality. We know that by creating happy tummies full of nutritious food, we help children build brighter futures, full of success, stability and happiness. When we help children, we help families and entire communities break out of vicious cycles of poverty.

Muslim Charity’s Feed a Child campaign provides hot, nutritious meals in schools. We ensure that children are nourished, helping boost attention and energy, and tackling hunger. Many parents are happy to send their children to school, thus improving literacy rates and long-term progress for entire communities. Food is provided by poor and women-headed small businesses, which is helping to boost local economies. We are supporting widows in establishing their own livelihoods and sources of income, while being deeply invested in their own communities and the wellbeing and development of their children and those in their community.

IMPACT

When you feed a child, you help tackle hunger and malnutrition. With nutritious food, we can combat stunting and help ensure that children grow strong and healthy. Physical development is also closely linked with mental, cognitive and intellectual development, meaning that when you feed a child, you can also help them grow in intellect and personal development. Providing meals in schools also serves as an incentive for families to send their children to school, thus boosting enrolment and retention rates. Without food in schools, many parents will need to shoulder the burden of their meals, and prefer for their children to stay home and work to support the family. Now, through our project, we are helping more children to go to school, boosting literacy rates and opening up futures and possibilities for a multitude of generations. Education is hugely important for progress for entire communities, giving children the best start to life. Without education, children’s opportunities and futures are severely limited.


In 2022, we provided 350 school children in Pakistan and in Uganda, with regular hot meals every single day, helping to tackle hunger and keep more children in education. In 2023, we’ll be feeding regular school meals to 2,000 school children in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya.
