Can charity be a gift?
In the Holy Qur’an, Allah tells us: “Those in whose wealth there is a recognised right for the needy and the poor” (70:24-25).
This means that our charity is a right upon the poor, and in reality, that wealth was never actually ours. Giving Zakat is often discussed as a form of redistribution of wealth, providing support to the most vulnerable sections of our society, and keeping the ummah united.
In many ways, our charity acts as a gift as it is something good, hopeful, helpful, inspiring and empowering that the donor chooses to give to those who receive it. Gifts are positive, enhancing the connection between people and often seek to be an expression of gratitude, friendship or appreciation. In this way, it is nice to think about the relationship between giving charity and giving gifts. However, it is important to remember that giving charity is not transactional in the way gift-giving may be, and that there is deep wisdom and instruction deriving from our faith that adds layers of meaning.
Making a charitable donation, for example to our Ramadan Appeal, on behalf of another person could make an ideal gift to them.
The gift of a bright future and long-term change
The aim of any charitable donation is to make a difference in the life of those most vulnerable. The best of those, is long-term change and helping people to build a brighter future. To be able to provide such opportunities is much like giving the gift of hope and a brighter future to those who would otherwise struggle without.
Many of our projects at Muslim Charity, and especially within our Ramadan Appeal are centred on making a huge difference and opening the doors of possibilities.
Through our water projects, we provide families and communities with clean water close to their homes, every single day, for years to come. We help thousands of people each year with clean water, who would otherwise be reliant on dirty, contaminated water. Drinking dirty water is one of the deadliest threats to life, claiming 1,000 children’s lives every single day. With no water near their homes, women and children have no choice but to walk for miles each day. Now, thanks to our water projects, that time is able to be spent on other things that matter: children are going to school and women are thriving at home, working and in their communities.
Gifts for special people in your life with endless blessings
Making a charitable donation on behalf of someone you love, know or respect, is a very beautiful gift you could offer them. The most special form of charity to give in somebody else’s name is Sadaqah Jariyah. Sadaqah Jariyah is a unique charity which benefits those in need for years to come, bringing endless rewards. Sadaqah Jariyah projects are centred on bringing continuous benefit to those in need, and every time somebody benefits, you, or the person for whom you intended the charity, will also receive rewards and blessings, even after you have passed away.
You could build a well in the name of somebody else, and they will receive a detailed report with pictures of their well and a plaque with their name. You could also build a school or a masjid in somebody’s name.
