Muslim Charity Launches Relief Effort
The 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Nepal, which killed more than 5,000 people (as of 29th April 2015) and the death toll is still rising, was the strongest and deadliest quake to strike the region in 80 years. In this fragile country where nearly a third of the population lives in poverty, the suffering caused by the destruction of lives and livelihoods could last years.
While images of collapsed buildings in densely populated Kathmandu have dominated news stories, the epicenter was actually about 50 miles to the northwest, where the extent of the crisis remains unknown. Access roads have been damaged or blocked by landslides and communication lines are down, preventing relief workers to get accurate information and access to the villages and outlying cities.
