Muslim Charity commemorates International Literacy Day by pledging more efforts and funds with the support of donors

The first word revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was “Iqra!” which means “Read!”

“Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), Has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, Who has taught (the writing) by the pen. Has taught man that which he knew not.” [The Holy Qur’an, 96:1-5].

Investing in education and literacy is important to make a better world for future generations. Almost a billion people are illiterate in the world and of those two third are women and girls. There are a number of reasons for this such as social attitudes, provision of infrastructure, schools close to communities, teaching practices and so on. The issue is not only about access but also about improving the quality of learning. As per Muslim Charity’s Director of Programmes, “We have to work on access, quality and other measures to ensure that girls not only get into school but actually do learn.”

Muslim Charity is working in Pakistan towards the improvement of infrastructure of Government Girls Primary Schools through Parents’ Teachers Associations and community-based organisations. The number of children in Pakistan not attending school amounts to nearly 25 million. The average number of years of schooling completed is 4.9 years in Pakistan which is slightly ahead of Angola and Bangladesh. There are only 13 countries in the world with a lower adult literacy rate than Pakistan, according to data compiled by the United Nations. These countries include Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Ethiopia, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone and Mali, collectively some of the poorest countries in the world.

During the year 2013-2014 Muslim Charity intends to extend its primary school education programme in Somalia and Bangladesh. In Somalia, school enrolment rates are at the lowest in the world with only four out of every 10 children in school, largely due to two decades of conflict. Of course girls are the worst affected with only a third enrolled in school and many dropping out before the completion of their primary school career.

Please donate generously towards Muslim Charity’s Girls Education Programme to make child-friendly school environments by improving the infrastructure of schools in Pakistan.
