Through your patronage in 2014, we are now Supporting Our Sisters in East Africa

Our supporters have shown true dedication towards our campaigns and through their support and philanthropic giving during 2014, Muslim Charity has played a crucial role in providing aid to those most in need. From supporting our sisters in generating a sustainable income, to providing access to clean flowing water, to renovating and developing schools, your donations are transforming the lives of vulnerable women in East Africa.

We would like to thank all friends of Muslim Charity for believing in and contributing towards the Supporting Our Sisters campaign.

Our Sisters’ Stories

Muslim Charity visited a Vocational Training Centre we support in the city of Burao in Somaliland. With the funds raised, we were able to gift the local vulnerable women who had graduated from the vocational training classes, with a sewing machine and a stock of cloth. The aim of this initiative was to enable women, especially widows of war, to utilise their newly developed skills for income generation means.

Sister Khadijah lives in Burao City, Somaliland. After receiving assistance from Muslim Charity and obtaining vocational training she now runs her own business making and selling rugs out of plastic thread. This work enables her to earn a daily profit, which is helping her take care of her family of seven and provide a better future for them. Today, Khadijah does not only sell rugs but is also helping other women to stand strong on their own two feet with hope and dignity; this is sustainable living at its best!

Sister Aaimona, like many other women in Somalia, previously collected firewood and sold it in the market to make ends meet. After attending our vocational training centre, she expressed hope in a better life and gratitude towards our supporters; “Learning tailoring will help me in restoring my dignity as I am socially abandoned due to my divorce and poverty. I hope to learn and start my own tailoring business so that I can be able to take care of my family without having to depend on peoples alms. I am thankful for the donations of the sisters and brothers in the UK and to Muslim Charity for bringing such an initiative into our town.”

The rural women of Faradero, Somalia, used to walk 6 to 8 hours to salvage water from contaminated sources; this lead to the development and spread of waterborne diseases within their homes and communities, sadly increasing the percentage fatality amongst the weak and young. Through our “Supporting Our Sisters” campaign these women are now enjoying the blessings of clean and fresh water! By installing a water borehole system the women have a source of fresh, clean and flowing water. This source enables them to provide water not only to their families but to their livestock. “Before the construction of the water borehole I could not imagine the transformation in the lives of the nomadic people but today, I feel so humbled to be part of this transformation because it is about human lives, health and livelihood.”

The philanthropic giving of our donors has helped thousands of children, especially girls, return back to schools as they do not have to assist with water collection and other daily living errands. They are not only more healthy but also now have an opportunity to transform their dreams into a reality thanks to the generous support of our donors.

Our Plans for 2015

With the success of our projects in 2014, we want to expand our projects to more communities, more people and more sisters in 2015! Providing philanthropic opportunities through our ‘Supporting Our Sisters’ campaign is proving to be an effective method in sustaining good health, education and livelihoods, so we are going to continue with this effective model! There are still 45 million children in East Africa in need of assistance and millions of women who still have to walk miles for water.
We believe that a community can only reach its full potential by involving everyone in its social and economic progression. Through our Supporting Our Sisters campaign we aim to provide women with an array of resources, skills and knowledge which they can benefit from to create a better life not only for themselves, but for their families and communities.
