SKYDIVE 4 SLUM SCHOOLS

Dedicated to improving the quality of life for vulnerable children and education Muslim Charity has always been at the heart of the community as well as leading with adrenaline-charged challenges. On Saturday 29th June 2019, 28 superheroes representing TEAMMC took part in our annual skydive at the renowned North London Skydive Centre on the outskirts of Cambridge. This has been the biggest turnout so far and we were as much excited as our jumpers.

A staggering £15,000 was raised to support educational programmes in slums in countries such as Bangladesh and Kenya. An estimated 30% of children in Kenya do not attend school. Most of these children are from deprived backgrounds where the day to day struggle includes the shortage of food, clean water, sanitation and access to education.

Almost 26% of all youth aged between 5 and 14 years are forced to forego education due to extreme poverty. We hope to support schools in the rural areas and the children who live in the slums of Kibera. Children who attend school are less likely to face the dangers and offers from gangs who are ready to assimilate them into gangs and criminality and worse traffic them into sexually abusive and punishing work.

Many children work on plantations in backbreaking work while others work in back street alleys in dangerous and horrendous conditions. Sylhet is home to thousands of people that live in slums. Often they are day labourers or people with very low incomes. Their children are either assimilated into helping the family earn money or struggle to go to mainstream schooling. Schools provide a safe place for children to grow and learn. They are places where children can seek help, advice and be inspired.

After a quick debrief, our participants geared up bravely for the jump at heights of 10,000 to 15,000 feet above ground. Imagine free-falling 5,000 feet and reaching speeds of 120 mph before opening your parachute for a 5-minute canopy ride looking over the amazing landscape as you descend.

The event finished on a high and our participants were delighted with their jumps and the efforts provided by Muslim Charity and the Skydive Centre. One participant commented, “great event, very challenging” another happy participant remarked “efficient planning and support from the team”.  We hope to continue to serve our communities, inspire generations as well as support humanitarian causes around the globe.
