Save Our Souls: Muslim Charity appeals for saving lives of people affected by earthquake in Pakistan

A deadly earthquake has shaken the poverty-stricken western parts of the country in the Awaran area of the Balochistan province of Pakistan. The earthquake measured 7.8 on the Richter scale which itself shows the severity of the disaster. As per reports, the Awaran area is affected very badly and hundreds of people are feared to be dead whilst big losses to homes and buildings have been reported which may cause further loss of precious lives.

The government has announced a state of emergency in the province and relief activities have started by the government through the army and navy. Shortage of food and water have been reported whilst a large number of people have become homeless and are out on the streets looking for support. Medical facilities are few and far between and often poorly stocked with a lack of medicine or qualified personnel. Awaran district has about 300,000 residents spread out over 11,197 square miles.

Noor Ahmad is from the affected town of Mashky and says, “we have lost everything, even our food is now buried under mud and water from underground channels is now undrinkable because of excessive mud in it due to the earthquake.” The Balochistan government spokesman, Muhammad Buledi, said “We are seriously lacking medical facilities and there is no space to treat injured people in the local hospitals.” The scale of the territory involved is daunting. Entire villages have been flattened in the impoverished districts of Awaran, Kech, Khuzdar, Panjgur and Chaghi.

In response to the disaster Muslim Charity is on the ground and helping the affected population in Awaran and Khuzdar through the provisions of food, non-food items and medicines. As per our emergency assessments the surviving families need temporary shelters and basic non-food items.
