Muslim Charity assists the flood affected in the UK

Muslim Charity has provided house-cleaning items to flood affected families and the local community through the Flooding on the Levels Action Group (FLAG) in Bridgewater, Somerset. The assistance provided is part of Muslim Charity’s efforts to help local support groups and institutions to meet the needs of flood affected people in the first phase of rehabilitation. The local volunteers of FLAG and local community members are doing a fantastic job in running the Old Somerfield Distribution Centre which has received much support from inside and outside of the UK. The Muslim Charity team visited the Distribution Centre on Monday 24th February 2014 and handed over relief items to representatives of FLAG.

Muslim Charity’s relief and rehabilitation team, consisting of staff and volunteers, was accompanied by Dr Shaheen Chaudhry who serves as the High Sheriff of the neighbouring City and County of Bristol. She emphasised on the need of solidarity, compassion and helping the flood affected communities by commenting, “what goes with our faith is to help others, to respond and show compassion when people need it and I’m glad we can do it.”

The UK Director of Muslim Charity, Maroof Pirzada, commented, “At Muslim Charity we believe in the alleviation of the sufferings of people and today we stand shoulder to shoulder with those who have been affected by the floods. The floods could have affected anyone, it is unfortunate that it just so happened in Southern England, and at this time of need we should stand together and provide support where it is needed.”

Bryoni Sadler, a member of FLAG, thanked Muslim Charity and the communities for their efforts in helping the families affected by the floods, “The scale of devastation is enormous and the help offered by all segments of society in and outside of the UK is also remarkable. My heart-felt sympathies go out to all those who generously donated and offered their support at these difficult and testing times.”

Thousands have been affected by the series of floods, high winds and bad weather. Following the improvement in weather recently, the worse seems to be over for now but exceptionally high levels of ground water could pose problems for months to come. “The most vulnerable among the affected people are the old-aged and physically challenged persons. When the water will start receding, we will require manpower to help the vulnerable groups of the community in cleaning and bringing back normality in their lives. I would request communities to come forward and volunteer for the noble cause of helping these vulnerable groups” said Muslim Charity’s Director Programmes, Irfan Rajput, whilst explaining the future strategies of Muslim Charity to help in the rehabilitation of communities.

Muslim Charity is hugely grateful to Mr Mahboob Chaudhry, a dedicated and committed member of the community who helped in assisting the flood-affected communities in Somerset. Talking about his passion, Mr Chaudhry explained, “Muslims should be actively present at any time of hardship or catastrophe regardless of the victims’ religion or race. Being part of the society we should help in alleviation of the sufferings of people. I will urge our brothers and sisters to come forward and volunteer themselves for helping the vulnerable old-aged and physically challenged flood-affected people in Somerset and other parts of Southern England.”

Muslim Charity urges and requests all to support the flood-relief efforts and to volunteer with Muslim Charity by registering your interest with us so that together we are able to make a difference.
