Impactful Qurbani Donations: Explore Muslim Charity’s Efforts

Every penny of your Qurbani donation to Muslim Charity is making the world of difference to those most in need. Giving Qurbani is also a deeply sacred act, one where we can renew our connection with Allah (swt), and demonstrate our devotion to Him (swt).

What is Qurbani?

The practise of Qurbani began with our forefather, Prophet Ibrahim (as). Our beloved Prophet had a dream whereby he was being ordered by Allah (swt) to sacrifice his son, Ismail (as). Prophet Ibrahim (as) spent years longingly waiting for a child, until finally he was blessed with a son. Some accounts suggest that Prophet Ibrahim (as) was 83 years old when he became a father! This made the order even more painful and difficult, causing him a lot of stress. Prophet Ismail (as) encouraged his father to trust in Allah and follow Allah’s command with trust, devotion and love.

‘He (Ismail) said, “O my father! Do as you are commanded. If Allah wills, you shall find me of the patient”’. (Qur’an, 37:102)

Prophet Ibrahim (as) prepared to sacrifice his son, and at the last moment, Allah spared the life of Ismail (as), replacing him with a ram. In being prepared to sacrifice something so dear to him, Prophet Ibrahim (as) demonstrated the most pure and highest level of devotion to Allah (swt). The sacrifice was also symbolic of the sacrifice and cut off attachment to the material world, remembering our own fitrah, purpose on this Earth, and transient nature of the dunya.

Why do we make a Qurbani donation?

Every year, Muslims all over the world offer a Qurbani donation, making their own sacrifice to commemorate the actions of Prophet Ibrahim (as). It is a highly sacred and spiritual act, offering us the chance to reflect on our own relationship with Allah (swt), and our devotion to our faith.

Prophet Muhammad (saw) said:

“It is the Sunnah of your father Ibrahim (AS). For every hair of the Qurbani, you receive a reward from Allah ﷻ” [Hadith, Tirmidhi]

According to most scholars, Qurbani is considered wajib in accordance with the Hanafi school of thought, for all those who are able to pay Zakat, while others consider it to be sunnah mu’akadah – highly recommended, but not obligatory.

Prophet Muhammad (saw) said:

“Whoever slaughtered the sacrifice before the prayer, he just slaughtered it for himself, and whoever slaughtered it after the prayer, he slaughtered it at the right time and followed the tradition of the Muslims.”  [Hadith, Sahih Bukhari]

Offering Qurbani is one of the most rewardable things that can be done in the holy month of Dhul Hijjah. The first nine days of Dhul Hijjah have been decreed to be the best in the year, even better than Ramadan. They offer opportunities for reaping rewards, blessings, the mercy of Allah, and give us a change to truly reflect on our relationship with Allah (swt).

The Impact of your Qurbani Donation

With each Qurbani donation, fresh, nutritious meat is distributed among poor and vulnerable communities over the days of Eid-ul-Adha. For many people receiving Qurbani meat, this will be the first time they will be eating meat all year. Your Qurbani donation is helping to tackle hunger and promote wellbeing and joy across the days of Eid.

At Muslim Charity, our partner teams work hard on the ground to ensure the highest quality Qurbani process and distribution. We procure animals in advance, selecting only those who are in excellent health and condition, meeting the age requirements as stipulated by Islamic guidelines. We ensure animals are kept in the best possible condition and that their sacrifice is done in a manner that is painless, dignified and simple.

We also ensure that any Qurbani donation is distributed over the days of Eid, and to those most in need. Our teams identify vulnerable families ahead of time, and ensure meat is delivered timely. Qurbani is carried out across Asia, Africa and the Middle East, benefiting thousands of families every year.

Why is Qurbani so important?

With a worsening hunger crisis around the world, your Qurbani means more than ever. Reports suggest that worldwide there are approximately 50 million people on the brink of starvation, across 45 countries. A person dies from hunger every 4 seconds.

These statistics are horrific, but bring home the importance of your Qurbani donation. Not only does offering Qurbani mean that families are able to enjoy a nice, hearty meal over Eid, but they are provided with food that is nutritious. Often for families who are food-insecure, their diets lack good nutrition, having consequences on the development and growth of children and adults, as well as cognitive development. By providing meat, we give families a source of protein for a while, giving them a boost and further support.

By using a local model, we work with local vendors and teams, boosting local economies and providing jobs where possible. This means that we support local communities even further, helping to create lasting change.
