Food packs distributed to needy families in Hushe Valley, Gilgit Baltistan

As part of Muslim Charity’s Coronavirus Emergency response, we have been supporting needy families around the world.

Over the past few days we have distributed food packs to more than 110 families of porters who are the “backbone” of mountaineering and trekking in the Himalayas. They only have 5 months in the year when they can earn a livelihood and that is the tourists’ season between April and August and the income they earn during this period helps them survive throughout the year.

However, this year the lockdown and COVID-19 has added to the woes of the already impoverished communities of porters, cooks and drivers in the picturesque Hushe Valley of Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. Tourists have not come this year for mountaineering and trekking due to the global pandemic and travel restrictions which has left hundreds of families in complete despair and not knowing how they will survive the year. Hushe Valley is known for its Baltoro Glacier, Concordia and K2 via Gondogoro Pass and is usually very busy at this time of the year.

Muslim Charity has Food packs distributed and provided food packs for two months to more than 110 of the most vulnerable families of porters, cooks and drivers. We are thankful to those who supported our Coronavirus Emergency and you can continue to do so here: https://muslimcharity.org.uk/coronavirus
